The cajon is one of the most accessible percussion instruments in the world. Because of this, it is very suitable as a beginner instrument for students new to drumming. We are asked all the time about where to find lessons designed specifically for the cajon. It has always been my opinion that taking one on one lessons from an instructor who is competent in cajon is going to be your ideal situtaion. However, I also realize that many people to not have that available to them. With that said, there are other ways to learn how to play the cajon.
A great way to teach yourself how to play cajon is with the Hal Leonard Cajon Method
This book covers all the basics of the cajon. It has dozens of exercises to improve your technique as well as over 30 rhythms and groves from a variety of musical genres. There are also 45 online accompanying videos that demonstrate the rhythms and grooves covered in the book.
The author is our good friend and world renowned cajon player Paul Jennings.
